The Effects of Social Media on Teenagers 

 

In today’s digital world, social media has become an essential part of teenagers’ daily lives. While it offers ways to connect with others, the overuse of social media can be harmful to teenagers. Here are some of the causes and effects of using social media. 

One of the main causes is excessive screen time. Many teenagers spend hours scrolling through their feeds every day. This not only leads to a loss of connection with reality, including family and friends, but also causes a lack of sleep, as they stay immersed in the digital world even during midnight hours. Another issue is cyberbullying. Since social media is a public platform, everything you say or do becomes part of your digital footprint. There is a high possibility of receiving harassment, whether from someone you know or from a complete stranger. In severe cases, even a single online comment can negatively affect your daily life. In addition, many posts on social media are fake or heavily edited. However, teenagers may mistakenly believe that these idealized pictures represent reality. This can lead to anxiety, depression, and even hatred toward their own bodies. Furthermore, social media can be a major distraction from schoolwork. Teenagers often check their accounts during study time or class. This makes it difficult for them to focus on academics, which may result in poor test performance. Even worse, their ability to concentrate may decrease, as they feel the constant need to reply immediately and keep up with the latest trends. 


Social media allows people to connect across time and distance, but it can be harmful to teenagers, especially since not all of them are fully mature. It is impossible to completely avoid using social media, so the most effective approach is to use it mindfully. It’s also helpful to develop hobbies in the real world. This way, teenagers can find a healthy balance between the digital world and reality.
